In the yellow flower of mountain arnica (Lat. Arnica montana), many active principles that have anti-inflammatory and analgesic action are hidden, and most of them are attributed to the Sesquiterpene lactone, helenalin. Sesquiterpene lactones, carotenoids, flavonoids and essential oils have positive effects in spraying, swelling, rheumatic disorders, suffusions and bruises. Clinical studies have shown that the local application of arnica can be considered as an alternative to ibuprofen gel in the treatment of osteoarthritis of small fist joints. Mechanisms of the arnica effect in the treatment of wounds and their faster healing are still the subject of research. Italian scientists have come to the conclusion that arnica acts on macrophages by modulating numerous genes and increasing cellular mobility. Potential therapeutic effect of the arnica is to stimulate the production of adhesive protein, fibronectin, by macrophages, which results in faster healing of the wound.
